Trailer Watch: Patricia Arquette, Angela Bassett, & Felicity Huffman Experience “Otherhood”

"Otherhood"

“What kind of son forgets Mother’s Day?” A trio of friends are left discussing this very question when their sons forget the holiday. Patricia Arquette, Angela Bassett, and Felicity Huffman feel like they’ve moved beyond motherhood, and are now living in a state of “otherhood.” A new trailer for Cindy Chupack’s “Otherhood” sees the underappreciated pals hatching a plan to head to Manhattan where they’ll confront their self-centered sons.

Gillian (Arquette) knows that moms “gotta let [children] individuate, blah blah blah,” except it’s Mother’s Day. And they won’t let the men’s selfishness slide. “We aren’t on vacation. We are on a mission,” says Helen (Huffman) as they take the road.

From the looks of the trailer, all three men are unpleasantly surprised when their respective moms show up unannounced on their doorstep, though it seems like the trip to NYC is ultimately a good idea. Their time out of town gives Gillian, Helen, and Carol (Bassett) the opportunity to bond with each other and reconnect with their sons. “You know who you are without me. I need to figure out who I am without you,” Carol confides in her son.

“Otherhood” marks Chupack’s feature directorial debut. Best known for her work as a writer, her credits include “Sex and the City,” “Better Things,” and “I’m Dying Up Here.” She directed an ep of the latter.

You can catch “Otherhood” in select theaters and on Netflix August 2. Chupack co-wrote its script.
