“Do you know your place in the universe?” A new trailer for “Out of Blue” doesn’t shy away from the big questions. Far from a typical police procedural, Carol Morley’s latest sees homicide detective Mike Hoolihan (Patricia Clarkson) investigating the murder of an astrophysicist and black hole expert (Mamie Gummer, “The Good Wife”), and it’s not long before the case destabilizes her view of the universe and own identity.
“You two aren’t as different as you seem,” Mike’s told. “You’re both looking for clues.” But those clues could lead to a dangerous place. “You know what happens to nosy girls?” the detective is asked. “They lose their noses.”
Written and directed by Morley, “Out of Blue” premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. The film is an adaptation of Martin Amis’ 1997 novel “Night Train.” “I was attracted to the book because there was a female lead detective, and I was excited to expand on her, and make a film about a complex woman who owns the investigative gaze,” Morley told us.
Morley’s previous features include “The Falling,” “Dreams of a Life,” and “Edge.”
Clarkson just won a Golden Globe for her supporting role in HBO’s Southern Gothic miniseries “Sharp Objects,” an adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name. “House of Cards,” “The Bookshop,” and “The Party” are among her other recent credits. She received an Oscar nomination in 2004 for “Pieces of April.”
“Out of Blue” opens March 15 in the U.S. and March 29 in the UK.
