Trailer Watch: Penelope Tries to Keep It All Together in “One Day at a Time”

“One Day at a Time”

A trailer has dropped for the second season of Netflix’s “One Day at a Time” reboot. While Penelope (Justina Machado) insists she’s “feeling great” thanks to her kids, job, and going back to school, the war vet and single mom later admits she’s struggling to juggle all of her responsibilities. “It’s like I’m trying to do three things great but I’m just doing them all badly,” she says.

The spot focuses mostly on Penelope’s parenting. We see a hilarious exchange between her and Elena (Isabella Gómez) where she pressures the teen to get a job, telling her that the advice to “do what you love and the money will follow” is applicable only to “rich white ladies who want to make jewelry.” Meanwhile, Alex (Marcel Ruiz) gets into a fight with another kid after being called racist names.

“One Day at a Time” centers on a Cuban-American family and its first season tackled issues like immigration, coming out, and equal pay, and it seems safe to say that the critically acclaimed sitcom will continue to explore timely subject matter in its sophomore season.

Co-showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellett’s parents came to the U.S. when they were 15 and didn’t speak English. She’s described herself as “a product of the American dream,” and explained that for her, “One Day at a Time” “means more than a television show.” She elaborated, “This means hopefully the start to conversations that can heal,” which is “interesting because when we set out to do this show, I didn’t set out to be really political with it but it certainly seems like it’s a time when these conversations need to be having.”

Season 2 of “One Day at a Time” debuts on Netflix January 26.
