Trailer Watch: Riley Keough & Jena Malone are BFFs in So Yong Kim’s “Lovesong”

“Lovesong”

If and when the line between platonic and romantic gets blurred, it’s unlikely that a friendship will ever be the same. A trailer for So Yong Kim’s “Lovesong” has been released, and it hints that the women at the center of the story, longtime BFFs Sarah (Riley Keough, “American Honey”) and Mindy (Jena Malone, “The Hunger Games” franchise), don’t just care deeply about one another — there’s also an element of desire.

“Neglected by her husband, Sarah embarks on an impromptu road trip with her young daughter and her best friend, Mindy,” the film’s official synopsis details. “Along the way, the dynamic between the two friends intensifies before circumstances force them apart. Years later, Sarah attempts to rebuild their intimate connection in the days before Mindy’s wedding.”

“I just feel like I’m going crazy,” Sarah confides to Mindy in the clip. Mindy reassures her, saying, “It’s okay to feel a little crazy, but it’s not fair to you to have to do it all yourself. So have some fun.” But their road trip and all of the “fun” seems to leave a major mark on Sarah, who, years later, is still harboring more-than-platonic feelings for Mindy.

“I wanted to explore a story about love that is atypical and drew upon a friendship I had in college,” Kim told Women and Hollywood.

“Lovesong,” Kim’s fourth feature, premiered at Sundance last year. Kim penned the script with Brad Rust Gray (“Jack & Diane”). She previously wrote and directed “In Between Days,” “Treeless Mountain,” and “For Ellen,” the latter of which starred Malone. Kim’s TV credits include “Queen Sugar,” “Transparent,” and “American Crime.”

Gamechanger Films, an equity fund that supports female-directed features, provided some of the film’s financing.

“Lovesong” opens in theaters February 17. Watch the trailer to see Sarah and Mindy’s chemistry, but be warned that there’s a heartbreaking scene showing Sarah’s introduction to Mindy’s fiance.
