The familiar, heavy breath of Darth Vader is a lingering presence over the end of the new trailer for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” but our female lead, Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) seems nonplussed throughout her challenging quest.
The new trailer premiered last night during the Olympics while the women’s gymnastics all-around finals were being aired on NBC. The timing was fitting — powerful women were the theme of the night.
The saga in this film revolves around Erso being tasked with stealing the plans to the Death Star, the very plans that Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) stows away inside R2-D2 and are found by Luke Skywalker in the first “Star Wars” outing. The storyline was inspired by a part of the opening crawl of the first film, which reads: “During the battle, rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the Death Star…”
Jones, who was nominated for an Academy Award for playing Jane Hawking in “The Theory of Everything,” plays Jyn Erso, a member of the Rebel Alliance whose rebellious nature gets her into some trouble with the higher-ups, but which also makes her the perfect choice to head up a new mission.
In this new trailer, we get glimpses of new characters like the Alan Tudyk-voiced robot K-2SO and more from members of the rebellion and perhaps some Jedi action.
Having a second “Star Wars” film in a row where the main protagonist is female calls for a celebration. The “Rey-wakening” of “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens” brought a new female energy to the franchise, which was key, because there are tons of female “Star Wars” fans. And they’ll surely flock to the theaters this winter just like they did last in order to see themselves represented in one of the most beloved franchises in cinematic history.
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” hits theaters December 16. Check out the new trailer:
