Trailer Watch: Rooney Mara is Enthralled by Captivating Older Woman Cate Blanchett in ‘Carol’

The first teaser trailer for Todd Haynes’ much-anticipated adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s lesbian romance “The Price of Salt” has been released just as word comes that the film has been chosen as the American Express gala screening of the BFI London Film Festival.

“Beware, my foolish heart,” a singer croons as (maddeningly) brief snapshots of Carol (Cate Blanchett) and Therese (Rooney Mara)’s relationship are offered. This teaser for the period drama is all-too true to its name, revealing little of the plot and tantalizing viewers with what to expect. Stolen glances and lingering stares dominate the 70-second spot. What’s clear is that Carol has a magnetic presence, and shopgirl Therese can’t help but gravitate towards the confident older woman. Sadly, this is almost certainly a doomed romance: Social conventions and the existence of Carol’s husband stand in the way of these two lovers, and if Therese’s tears are any indication, heartbreak ensues.

“Carol” made its world premiere at Cannes this year, where Mara won a Best Actress prize for her performance, which we called “a revelation.” The BFI Fest screening on October 14 will mark its UK premiere. “Carol” opens in the US on November 20.
