“I may look like a nice English lady in a sensible cardigan, but these days it’s a thin veneer and it’s starting to crack,” says Rose Byrne in a new trailer for “Juliet, Naked.” The Golden Globe and Emmy nominee plays Annie, a woman stuck in a long-term relationship that leaves much to be desired. Her boyfriend Duncan (Chris O’Dowd) doesn’t want kids and won’t stop talking about it. He also won’t stop talking about his idol, Tucker Crowe (Ethan Hawke), an American musician whom he considers “one of the most unsung figures of alternative rock.”
When Annie posts a negative review of Tucker’s new album online, she receives an email from the man himself. Tucker hasn’t been seen in 20 years, but Annie is able to bring the reclusive rocker out of his shell in their correspondence, and it’s not long before the pen pals arrange to meet in London.
Byrne received two Emmy and Golden Globe nods apiece for her work in “Damages,” an FX legal thriller that ran from 2007-12. Her other credits include “Spy,” the “X-Men” franchise, and “Bridesmaids.”
Co-written by Tamara Jenkins (“The Savages”) and based on Nick Hornby’s novel of the same name, “Juliet, Naked” hits theaters August 17.
