Trailer Watch: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Is a Superhero in Betsy West and Julie Cohen’s “RBG”

“RBG”

As her legendary dissents prove, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg knows how to turn a phrase. Her way with words is one of her trademarks — as is her exercise regimen — and something the upcoming documentary “RBG” spotlights. “I ask for no favor for my sex,” Ginsburg clarifies in the trailer. “All I ask of our brethren is that they take their feet off our necks.”

Directed by Betsy West and Julie Cohen, “RBG” explores Ginsburg’s career all the way from her early days as an attorney fighting gender discrimination to today, where the “Notorious RBG” is one of the most powerful and recognizable feminist forces in politics.

When we asked West and Cohen about the best advice they’ve received in their careers, West said, “What Justice Ginsburg says her mother told her, ‘Anger is a waste of time.’ It’s not that you won’t get angry when bad or unfair things happen, but you should try to find a way to move forward.” She explained, “The strategy sure worked for Ginsburg: she went on to challenge the legal underpinnings of sexism in our country. By pushing through anger to action, she made the world a better place for every American woman.”

West’s words are echoed by Gloria Steinem in “RBG’s” trailer. “When you come right down to it,” she says, “[Ginsburg is] the closest thing to a superhero I know.”

The Justice’s story is also getting the biopic treatment in 2018. Mimi Leder’s “On the Basis of Sex” follows Ginsburg (Felicity Jones) as she establishes her law career, rises through the professional ranks, and begins to fight gender discrimination in the courtroom. Written by Daniel Stiepelman, Ginsburg’s nephew, “On the Basis of Sex” made the Black List and the first ever Athena List in 2014. Currently in post-production, the film is expected to hit theaters later this year.

“RBG” premiered at Sundance in January. The doc opens in select theaters May 4. Check out the trailer and poster below.
