Trailer Watch: Sally Field is a Lovable Eccentric in Lust in ‘Hello, My Name is Doris’

“Hello, My Name is Doris” has been generating awards buzz for its leading lady since the film premiered at SXSW back in March. The comedy marks Sally Field’s first starring role in almost 20 years, but her acting chops are far from rusty: Indiewire wrote that “the actress is at her best” in the film about a 60-year-old woman who pursues her co-worker John (Max Greenfield), a considerably younger man.

A newly released trailer for the film will help put Field’s name back in the spotlight — and Oscar conversations (for the 2017 edition of the ceremony). The spot begins with a candid confession from Doris: “I hope I don’t end up like one of those weirdo New Yorkers who chokes on a peanut and dies and no one misses me.”

Her longing for romance and connection leads to fixating on John, who just so happens to be charmed by the lovable eccentric, describing her as “weird in a good way.”

Doris has spent six decades on earth, but she isn’t set in her ways. She takes dating advice from a 13-year-old — e-stalking John’s Facebook — and plots ways to run into him.

Field shines in the hilarious trailer. It certainly makes you wonder wonder why it took so long for the Oscar winner to land a leading role. After a screening of the film in Austin, Field explained that it’s rare to get material this good. When Variety probed about the reason for the dearth of solid material — speculating that it’s the consequence of Hollywood not writing roles for women in general, especially women over 30 — Field concurred.

“They don’t write roles for women… and they certainly don’t write roles for women of age and women of color,” said Field. She elaborated, “Since the industry is run by men, men have a tendency to want to make stories about themselves and things they identify with. Then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

“Hello, My Name is Doris,” which was co-written by Laura Terruso, opens in theaters on March 11, 2016.
