“Ever since I was a kid, my hair was everything. I had to be fixed. Only then was I perfect,” explains Sanaa Lathan (“The Affair”) in a new trailer for Haifaa Al-Mansour’s “Nappily Ever After.” On the surface, Violet (Lathan) has what some would consider the perfect life — an enviable job, a handsome doctor boyfriend, and hair that looks like the kind on most magazine covers. She’s ready to take the next step in her perfect existence: to accept her boyfriend’s proposal. But it turns out the big surprise he’s been planning won’t lead to the altar. The big surprise is a little dog named Lola.
It’s not long before Violet has an epiphany. “I’ve worked so hard to be perfect. And it still wasn’t enough,” she says. She ditches her weave and buzzes her hair. Encouraged by her friends to “own it,” she vows to stop spending time and money trying to “fix” herself. She’s ready to focus on who she is beyond her exterior. And it looks like she finds someone who accepts her for who she is in the process.
Al-Mansour’s last feature, Elle Fanning-starrer “Mary Shelley,” opened earlier this year and will be available on DVD August 28. The biopic tells the story of “Frankenstein’s” trailblazing author.
“Nappily Ever After” premieres September 21 on Netflix.
