Sandra Oh is taking a break from chasing Jodie Comer around Europe and entering the world of academia. Set to launch on Netflix August 20, “The Chair” sees the “Killing Eve” star and 12-time Emmy nominee playing Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim, a professor who has recently been named as the Chair of the English Department at a prestigious university. She’s the first woman to take on the role, and one of the few faculty members of color at the school.
“I feel like somebody handed me a ticking time bomb because they wanted to make sure a woman was holding it when it explodes,” Ji-Yoon says in a new trailer for the comedy. The English department is in the midst of a major crisis. A beloved professor (Jay Duplass) — who also happens to be Ji-Yoon’s crush — is at the center of a scandal that’s tearing the department apart.
“You should be running this place. Instead you’re running around playing nice,” Ji-Yoon’s colleague (Nana Mensah) observes.
Oh will reprise her role as Eve Polastri in the upcoming fourth and final season of BBC America spy thriller “Killing Eve.” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Sideways” are among her other credits.
Amanda Peet, whose recent on-screen credits include “Dirty John” and “Brockmire,” is stepping behind the camera for “The Chair.” She’s writing and serving as showrunner on the series. She and Oh are among its exec producers.
“The Chair’s” trailer features music by The Linda Lindas, the girl group that went viral for their performance of “Racist, Sexist Boy.”
