“Your beauty, your bravery, your gifts are your downfall,” Margot Robbie warns Saoirse Ronan in a new trailer for “Mary Queen of Scots.” Set in the 16th century, the historical drama sees Mary Stuart (Ronan) returning to her roots. Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary is under pressure to remarry. Instead, she decides to travel back to her “native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth I (Robbie),” the film’s synopsis details. And Elizabeth is far from willing to step aside and welcome Mary back as anything other than a figurehead.
Both Mary and Elizabeth are determined to rule the throne, and are willing to do whatever it takes to outmaneuver one another.
Ronan and Robbie received Oscar nods this year for their respective roles in “Lady Bird” and “I, Tonya.” Ronan’s next project, “Little Women,” re-teams her with “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig. Robbie’s upcoming films include “Marian,” a new iteration of Robin Hood folklore, and “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),” a “Suicide Squad” spinoff helmed by Cathy Yan.
Directed by Josie Rourke, “Mary Queen of Scots” opens in select theaters this Friday, December 7.
