Trailer Watch: Saoirse Ronan Leaves Ireland Behind for ‘Brooklyn’

“Brooklyn” received rave reviews out of Sundance, with many critics suggesting that the romantic drama may end up a serious contender come awards season. Our colleagues at The Playlist offered effusive praise for its leading lady, Saoirse Ronan, writing that “Not enough good things can be said about [her] performance.”

A trailer has been released for the love story, which takes place on opposite sides of the Atlantic. Eilis (Ronan) leaves Ireland — and her family — behind in search of opportunity in America. The new immigrant finds the transition to living in New York not only challenging but heartbreaking. “I wish that I could stop feeling that I want to be an Irish girl in Ireland,” Eilis confesses. Her acute case of homesickness seemed to be cured, or at least alleviated, by a chance meeting with a charming young Italian fellow. The two are immediately smitten with one another, but their courtship is interrupted when a death in the family brings Eilis back to her homeland — and possibly into the arms of another suitor.

Nick Hornby penned the script for “Brooklyn.” The author-screenwriter previously wrote “An Education” and “Wild,” so we’re confident in his ability to represent a young woman on the cusp of major change.

“Brooklyn” lands in theaters November 6 — a good sign that Fox Searchlight believes in the film’s potential to get awards recognition. Julie Walters costars.
