Trailer Watch: Sarah-Violet Bliss’s SXSW Winner ‘Fort Tilden’ Is All About the Journey

Sarah-Violet Bliss and Charles Rogers’ feature directorial debut, “Fort Tilden,” made a big splash at the 2014 SXSW, where it scored the Grand Jury Prize. The comic tale — of two young women in the midst of quarter-life crises who just can’t get it right — now has a trailer.

Allie (Clare McNulty) and Harper (Bridey Elliott) meet a couple of cute guys and invite themselves along to a beach day at Fort Tilden the next day. After waking up bright and early to make their apartment “sex-ready” in case they opt to invite the fellows over, the pair, who some reviewers have compared to Romy and Michele, set off on what is an unexpectedly arduous journey to the beach.

The romper-clad women inspire contempt in fellow New Yorkers, who are appalled by Allie and Harper’s lack of courtesy and common sense. They strike a mother and child while riding their bikes and flee the scene. Allie’s bike is stolen shortly after — while she watches and does nothing to stop it because she’s too busy processing what’s happening. Yep — even a trip to the beach isn’t a trip to the beach for these two, who swap Xanax like Tic Tacs.

Bliss told Women and Hollywood that “[t]here’s more depth and richness to [the film] than people expect from a traditional comedy. Based on the premise, you might think it’s going to be a simple satire, but it’s actually much more complex than that.”

You’ll have the chance to look beyond the surface of “Fort Tilden” when it opens in theaters August 14.
