“How much evil do you have to do to do good?” asks Sasha Lane in a new trailer for “Utopia.” The Amazon Prime Video series sees the “American Honey” breakout investigating a comic book series about a genius scientist who makes horrible viruses.
“Utopia,” we’re told, is a story that predicted Ebola, MERS, and Zika years before the first cases in the real world. Now a new pandemic threatens to wreak havoc, and a connection is being traced to “Utopia.” Most folks are quick to dismiss conspiracy theories about the comic, but when they turn out to be true, a group of fans team up with a leading expert on viruses to uncover more about the mysterious comic and save humanity — even if it means they’re “practically begging to be slaughtered.”
“Gone Girl” author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn created “Utopia” and serves as showrunner. The thriller is based on the British series of the same name. Flynn previously served as a writer and exec producer on “Sharp Objects,” HBO’s Amy Adams-starrer based on her 2006 novel.
Lane is best known for her starring role in Andrea Arnold’s “American Honey.” “Hellboy,” “Hearts Beat Loud,” and “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” are among her other credits.
“Utopia” arrives on Amazon Prime September 25.
