Trailer Watch: Sasheer Zamata Spends “The Weekend” with Her Ex and His New Girlfriend

"The Weekend"

Zadie (Sasheer Zamata, “SNL”) is in for a trying weekend. She’s spending it at a bed and breakfast with her ex (Tone Bell, “Disjointed”) and his new girlfriend, Margo (DeWanda Wise, “She’s Gotta Have It”), whom Zadie is none too impressed with. A trailer for Stella Meghie’s latest film, aptly named “The Weekend,” debuted on Entertainment Weekly.

“Let’s not talk about politics — it’s too divisive,” Margo says over drinks. “Margo doesn’t really watch the news,” Zadie quips. “It’s on the same time as ‘Real Housewives.'”

To make matters worse, her mother is on her case about her personal life. Before she even greets her daughter, Karen (Kym Whitley) is reminding her about her biological clock. “It’s not nice for a young girl to give up,” she says. “These are the best years of your life.” “Hi, Mom,” Zadie pointedly replies.

But it’s not all bad. Zadie finds herself connecting to Aubrey (Y’lan Noel, “Insecure”), who seems to appreciate her biting sense of humor.

Meghie previously helmed features “Jean of the Joneses” and “Everything, Everything” as well as episodes of “Insecure” and “Grown-ish.” She’s reuniting with “Insecure’s” Issa Rae for her next two films, “The Photograph” and “American Princess.”

“The Weekend” has screened at TIFF, AFI Fest, SXSW, and Tribeca. It hits select theaters and VOD September 13.
