“At some point we all have to choose between what the world wants you to be and who you are. I made my choice. I’m done running,” says Scarlett Johansson in the final trailer for Cate Shortland’s “Black Widow.” Set between the events of “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” the standalone pic sees Black Widow/ Natasha returning to her homeland: Russia. The spy and assassin isn’t exactly welcomed with open arms.
“Before I was an Avenger, I made mistakes — and a lot of enemies,” Natasha admits.
Besides revealing more details about the film’s main villain, the mysterious Taskmaster, the trailer also includes some laughs. Natasha’s sister, Yelena, recalls telling folks at home that Black Widow “moved out West. You’re a science a teacher. Your husband, he renovates houses. You’re thinking about moving but you’re going to wait until the interest rates go down.”
Last year’s “Captain Marvel” is the only other Marvel feature to be directed by a woman to date. Anna Boden helmed the Brie Larson-starrer alongside Ryan Fleck. It grossed over $1 billion worldwide and is one of the highest-earning women-directed pics of all time. Another woman-helmed Marvel title, Chloé Zhao’s “Eternals,” is expected this fall.
“Berlin Syndrome,” “Lore,” and episodes of “SMILF” are among Shortland’s previous credits.
Johansson received nods for “Marriage Story” and “Jojo Rabbit” at this year’s Oscars. Pugh scored a nomination for “Little Women.”
“Black Widow” hits theaters May 1. Jac Schaeffer (“The Hustle”) co-wrote the script.
