Trailer Watch: Scarlett Johnasson Has Superpowers in Lucy

Lucy is the film we’ve been waiting for.

At the very least, it certainly looks like the film we’ve been waiting for, an action flick about a badass with superpowers with an original premise, killer special effects, a mission we can get behind, with a female protagonist.

Scarlett Johansson, who stars in two films (Under the Skin, Lucy) and co-stars in another two (Captain America 2, Chef) this year, plays the titular character. She’s a club kid in Taipei who’s forced into becoming a drug mule, and who more or less gets super-powered (increasingly so as the movie progresses) when the drugs accidentally enter her system. She wants to go to the hospital at first, but judging from the rest of the trailer — in which she gleans knowledge, telekinesis, and maybe the ability to manipulate time(?) — she seems to adjust pretty quickly.

Morgan Freeman and Korean superstar Choi Min-Sik (Oldboy) play supporting roles.

Lucy debuts August 8 in the US and August 22 in the UK.
