Trailer Watch: Sisters Learn About the Power of Three in the CW’s “Charmed” Reboot

"Charmed"

The Book of Shadows is being passed down. The CW has released an extended first look at the network’s “Charmed” reboot and the young women who have inherited the “guide to protect the innocent and vanquish demons.” But first they must accept their witchly fate.

The footage kicks off with two sisters discovering their mother’s dead body. Mel (Melonie Diaz, “Fruitvale Station”) suspects foul play, but Maggie (Sarah Jeffery, “Shades of Blue”) is convinced her sister is simply “obsessed” with their mom’s death and unable to move on. The pair are interrupted by a knock at the door — a young woman claiming to be their sister. After Macy (Madeleine Mantock, “Into the Badlands”) arrives, all three girls start having strange experiences, ranging from time freezing to the ability to read minds.

A mysterious man gathers the women to announce that they are “Charmed Ones, the most powerful trio of witches.” The “adviser to witches” reveals that their mother was also a witch. “Your mother bound your powers when you each were born to protect you and let you live normal lives,” he explains. “She began the process of unbinding those powers the night she was murdered.” Mel was right all along — their mother’s death was no accident.

The spot shows the sisters struggling to come to terms with the news — and the fact that it’ll adversely affect their social lives. But Mel is convinced that embracing their identities is what their mother would’ve wanted, and it’s what will allow them to hunt down her murderer. As their mother once said, “You’re better together. Your differences are your strengths. And nothing is stronger than your sisterhood. Always remember that.”

The new “Charmed” hails from “Jane the Virgin” creator Jennie Snyder Urman and writers Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin. The latter two penned the pilot.

“Charmed” alumna Shannen Doherty, Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs, and Rose McGowan aren’t involved in the reboot. The original show aired on from 1998-2006 on The WB.

The new Charmed will air on Sundays. No word on a specific premiere date.
