Trailer Watch: Sonequa Martin-Green Takes the Lead in “Star Trek: Discovery”

Sonequa Martin-Green in “Star Trek: Discovery”: CBS All Access

The first trailer for “Star Trek: Discovery” has dropped and it’s starships, Klingons, and women on the bridge galore.

According to the sci-fi show’s official synopsis, “Discovery” “will follow the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new life forms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself.”

That Starfleet officer is Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green, “The Walking Dead”), who is also our guide on our voyage to the stars in this first look at the show. While we glimpse Commander Burnham being told that she must “challenge [her] preconceptions,” Trekkies have been reassured that “Discovery” will “embrace the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers.”

It’s great to see the trailblazing franchise continuing a tradition of putting women front and center on TV. Martin-Green’s co-star Michelle Yeoh joins the likes “Star Trek: Voyager’s” Kathryn Janeway as a Starfleet Captain, who also features prominently in the new trailer.

The latest television incarnation of the legendary franchise is set to start streaming on Netflix September 24, while airing concurrently on CBS. Check out the trailer below.
