Trailer Watch: Sundance Winner and Oscar Hopeful “Hive” Tells the Story of a Woman-Run Business

"Hive"

Tired of waiting for men to come and save the day, a woman in a Kosovo village decides to make her own fate in “Hive.” A new trailer has arrived for Blerta Basholli’s Sundance winner, which has been named as Kosovo’s Oscar entry for Best International Feature Film. Based on a true story, the drama sees Fahrije (Yllka Gashi) fed up with life being put on hold while her community awaits the fate of husbands, fathers, and sons who went to fight in the war and have disappeared.

Lacking money and work, Fahrije resolves to launch a business with other women. They’ll make ajvar, a popular condiment, to sell. “Don’t you see these women are not OK?” she asks. Not everyone is impressed with her initiative. “They’re saying that if your husband was alive, he’d be ashamed of you,” she’s told.

“Hive” won the Audience Award, Directing Award, and World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in January. The film marks Basholli’s debut feature and will screen at the Film Forum in New York on November 5 and open in Los Angeles at Laemmle’s Royal Theatre on November 12.
