An adaptation of Jennifer Clement’s novel of the same name, “Prayers for the Stolen” is set in a solitary town in the Mexican mountains where being a girl or having a daughter is seen as a ticking time bomb. Mothers give their girls short hairstyles, blacken their teeth, and show them hiding places underground in an effort to protect them from local cartels who take girls away.
A new trailer for the drama sees a group of girls contemplating what it will be like if they need to flee. “What should we do if one of us has to leave suddenly?” one character asks.
Huezo previously directed “Tempestad,” a 2016 documentary following two women as they come up against corruption and injustice in Mexico.
“Prayers for the Stolen” will premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
A trailer also recently dropped for Julia Ducournau’s “Titane,” which is one of just four titles directed by women screening in Competition at Cannes 2021. The fest will take place in-person July 6-17.
