“Once the world was full of wonders. But it belongs to humans now,” a 1,500 year-old vampire explains in a new trailer for “A Discovery of Witches.” “We have all but disappeared — demons, vampires, and witches hiding in plain sight.” Matthew (Matthew Goode, “Downton Abbey”) has seen it all, but his perspective on the world and his place in it seems to change when he meets Diana (Teresa Palmer, “Lights Out”), a scholar at Oxford and a descendant of the Salem witches who unintentionally unlocks an enchanted manuscript and the magic in her blood.
Described as an “astonishingly powerful witch,” Diana is still learning to control her powers. The covenant forbids “interspecies relationships,” but when Matthew and Diana cross paths, it’s clear that the threat of war itself won’t stop them from falling in love.
“A Discovery of Witches” is based on Deborah Harkness’ “All Souls Trilogy,” which has sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide.
The series is produced by Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner’s Bad Wolf. Kate Brooke (“Mr Selfridge”) wrote the adaptation and is serving as showrunner.
“A Discovery of Witches” is set to premiere on Sky One in the UK later this year.
