Trailer Watch: Tessa Thompson and Melissa Leo Hit the Road in Laurie Collyer’s “Furlough”

“For the next 36 hours I own you,” Tessa Thompson tells Melissa Leo in a new trailer for “Furlough.” The dramedy sees the “Thor: Ragnarok” actress playing a rookie inmate tasked with escorting a prisoner on a death bed visit.

“Don’t turn your back on the prisoner,” Nicole (Thompson) is warned. “Don’t let the prisoner out of your sight — and whatever she says, don’t believe her.” Known as a hell-raiser, Joan (Leo) isn’t going to make Nicole’s job easy. With only six months left of her sentence, we see her trying to make an escape from Nicole once they are on the road— but the guard’s taser foils the inmate’s getaway.

On the surface, the two share little in common, but it’s not long before they forge a connection. “One thing I learned in this world — [you] gotta help yourself because no one else will,” Joan tells Nicole. And it’s no wonder she has such low expectations of people — the spot reveals that Joan’s mother has been paying Joan to steer clear of her own daughter. “I want you to stay away from my granddaughter,” she demands while on her death bed.

Check out the trailer to see Nicole making the case for why Joan should meet her daughter (Anna Paquin).

“Furlough” opens in NY and LA March 16, and will also be available on VOD. The pic co-stars Whoopi Goldberg.

Thompson can be seen in “Annihilation,” in theaters now. The acclaimed sci-fi centers on a team of scientists who set off on a dangerous expedition. She recently signed on to produce and star in a biopic of jewel thief Doris Payne.

“I’m Dying Up Here,” “Novitiate,” and “The Most Hated Woman in America” are among Leo’s latest credits. She won an Oscar in 2011 for “The Fighter” and received a nod in 2009 for “Frozen River.”
