Trailer Watch: The Aliens of “Arrival” Are Revealed to Amy Adams

“Arrival”: Paramount

Human beings have often misunderstood one another throughout history. Whether we speak the same language or not, miscommunications have led to catastrophic events. So imagine the pressure Amy Adams’ character is facing in “Arrival” as she attempts to prevent humans and aliens from misunderstanding one another — a scenario that may lead to global war.

Adams stars as Louise Banks, a linguistics expert who is recruited by the government to make first contact with the alien species after their pods enter the atmosphere. Louise must translate an extraterrestrial language and decode the aliens’ message and respond, but also get the leaders of the entire world to listen to, and believe, her translation. “As mankind teeters on the verge of global war,” the official synopsis continues, “Banks and the team race against time for answers — and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.”

In the latest trailer for “Arrival,” we finally get a glimpse of the aliens that come to Earth in 12 separate shell-shaped pods, and as the cast members have said before, they’re not what you’d expect. A few other details are revealed in this brand new domestic trailer and the coinciding international version: Louise seems to be a single, working mom, with a young daughter and a full-time job as a teacher. The alien language also looks like a combination between a Rorschach test and those rings your drink leaves on the table on a hot day.

“Arrival” will play at TIFF and Venice and hits U.S. theaters on November 11. Check out the new domestic trailer below.
