Trailer Watch: “The Chi” Tackles Joy and Despair in Equal Measure in Season 2

"The Chi"

When Kevin (Alex R. Hibbert, “Moonlight”) begins speaking in the trailer for “The Chi” Season 2, he seems to be listing his favorite things to do.”Bike, basketball, video games, drawing,” he says. But then he follows it up with, “I’ll probably do something like that if I grow up.” Yes, he uses the word “if.”

“Raising a black boy around here, sometimes — you have no idea,” Kevin’s mother, Nina (Tyla Abercrumbie, “The Chicago Code”), tells his teacher, a white man. Young black men are routinely killed in the neighborhood. Those who survive are constantly looking over their shoulders and their families never stop worrying.

Created by Emmy-winner Lena Waithe, “The Chi” will continue to present the highs and lows, comedy and tragedy, joy and despair of life in Southside Chicago in its sophomore season. Set to Meek Mill’s “Championships,” the largely atmospheric trailer reintroduces the sprawling drama’s characters and offers glimpses at their daily joys and struggles. Kevin isn’t sure if he’ll make it to adulthood, but he still gets in food fights and works up the nerve to kiss his crush. Ronnie (Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, “The Knick”) spends some quality time with his family, but is later shown behind bars.

Showrun by Ayanna Floyd Davis, Season 2 of “The Chi” premieres April 7 on Showtime.
