“Taking to the road changed who I thought I was,” says Julianne Moore in a new trailer for “The Glorias.” Julie Taymor’s nontraditional biopic of Gloria Steinem sees Moore, Alicia Vikander, Lulu Wilson, and Ryan Keira Armstrong each playing the feminist icon during different chapters of her life. The Sundance pic is based on Steinem’s 2015 memoir “My Life on the Road.”
“Travel is the best education. It’s the only education, really,” Gloria is told in the spot. She takes the advice to heart. “The road is messy in the way that real life is messy,” she says. “It leads us out of denial and into reality. It leads us out of our heads and into our hearts.”
After taking a life-changing trip to India, we see the activist and journalist going undercover at the Playboy mansion, where she’s working as a Playboy Bunny. When her co-workers warn that pay is deducted if they don’t smile or fit into their costumes, Gloria suggests that they “ought to join a union.”
Though she has a fear of public speaking, Gloria becomes convinced that her feminist message is too important not to share. She and Dorothy Pitman Hughes (Janelle Monáe) join forces to launch Ms. Magazine. “Speaking your mind will get you in deep trouble,” an older version of Gloria warns her younger self.
“The Glorias” features a number of other major players in the women’s movement, including Flo Kennedy (Lorraine Toussaint), Bella Abzug (Bette Midler), Dolores Huerta (Monica Sanchez), and Wilma Mankiller (Kimberly Guerrero).
Taymor’s other films include “Frida,” “Across the Universe,” and “The Tempest,” and she’s directed Broadway productions such as “The Lion King.” She received an Oscar nomination for writing the song “Burn It Blue” for “Frida,” her Frida Kahlo biopic starring Salma Hayek.
“The Glorias” will be available on digital and stream exclusively on Prime Video September 30. Taymor penned the script with Sarah Ruhl.
