Trailer Watch: “The Great Hack” Investigates How Data Is Being Weaponized

"The Great Hack"

“Data rights should be considered fundamental rights,” says one of the characters in “The Great Hack.” Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer’s documentary explores the world of data exploitation and looks behind the curtain of the “game-changing” Cambridge Analytica/Facebook data scandal. A trailer just dropped for the feature, which premieres on Netflix July 24.

“The reason why Google and Facebook are the most powerful companies in the world is because last year data surpassed oil in value,” we’re told. “Data is the most valuable asset on earth.”

“The Great Hack” explores how data is “being weaponized to wage cultural and political warfare,” according to its official synopsis.

The spot revisits the shocking revelations made public in the Cambridge Analytica/Facebook controversy, describing how particular Facebook users were targeted with the hopes of changing their minds during the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Noujaim is best known for directing 2013’s “The Square,” an Oscar-nominated doc about Egyptian revolutionaries. She serves as co-executive producer on “Ramy,” a Hulu series that follows a first-generation American Muslim living in New Jersey.
