Trailer Watch: “The Heiresses” Run Out of Money in Paraguay’s Oscar Submission

"The Heiresses"

A trailer has dropped for “The Heiresses,” Paraguay’s official submission in the foreign-language Oscar race. The award-winning drama tells the stories of Chela (Ana Brun) and Chiquita (Margarita Irun), descendants of wealthy families who have lived together for three decades. Neither of the lovers has ever had to work.

When the couple’s financial situation takes a turn for the worse, they begin selling their inherited possessions. The trailer shows how this decision causes speculation and gossip. Eventually their mounting debt leads to Chiquita being imprisoned on fraud charges, while Chela tries to adapt to daily life without her partner by her side — or financial stability.

After driving for the first time in years, Chela begins to offer a local taxi service to a group of elderly wealthy ladies. She meets Angy (Ana Ivanova), a significantly younger woman who challenges her to “dare [herself],” and seemingly pushes her outside of her comfort zone.

“The Heiresses” opens in New York January 16 with additional cities to follow.
