Trailer Watch: The Monarchy Struggles to Keep Up with the World in “The Crown” Season 2

“The Crown”

“Britain has changed beyond recognition,” Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy, “Wolf Hall”) watches a commentator say on television. “Yet the monarchy continues its pre-war routines as though nothing has happened.” The struggle to preserve the traditions of the monarchy while the rest of the world evolves looks like it will be the main conflict of Season 2 of “The Crown,” which has just released a new trailer scored to “I Only Have Eyes For You.”

As her sister Princess Margaret (Vanessa Kirby, Thea Sharrock’s “Me Before You”) embraces herself as “a woman for the modern age,” Elizabeth just wants to avoid scandal, especially when it concerns her adulterous, dissatisfied husband, Prince Philip (Matt Smith, “Doctor Who”). “This restlessness of yours — it has to be a thing of the past,” Elizabeth tells him. “One more scandal, one more national embarrassment, and it would all be over.”

Margaret’s affair with a photographer (Matthew Goode, “Downton Abbey”), the eventual downfall of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, and an apparent flirtation with a mystery man (Danny Sapani, “Harlots”) are just a few other plotlines “The Crown” has in store for Elizabeth this season.

“The Crown’s” first season collected 10 Emmy nominations and earned Golden Globes for Best TV Actress (Foy) and Best Television Series.

Season 2 will stream on Netflix beginning December 8. Check out the trailer and poster below.
