“I had an abusive life. There’s no other way to tell the story,” Tina Turner says in the new trailer for “Tina.” The rock superstar discusses her struggles and triumphs in the upcoming HBO documentary.
Turner reveals Buddhism helped her survive her abusive marriage and toxic professional relationship to Ike Turner. “I started really seeing that I had to make a change,” she recalls. She came out of their divorce with “nothing” but the rights to her name, which they previously had used in their musical collaborations.
But she was able to build her own career, independent of Ike, with that name. With a dream of being “the first Black rock ‘n’ roll singer to pack places like The Stones,” she went on to sell 100 million records and become a cultural icon. She’s also an inspiration to other survivors. “Her story reached so many people who felt like they had to keep their secrets locked away, deep down,” we’re told in the spot.
Oprah Winfrey, Angela Bassett, who received an Oscar nomination for portraying Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” and “Tina – The Tina Turner Musical” writer Katori Hall also provide commentary in “Tina.” The doc features archival footage collected from over 60 years.
Turner’s many hits include “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” “Let’s Stay Together,” and “Private Dancer.” She has won eight Grammys, three Grammy Hall of Fame Awards, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
“Tina” premieres March 27 on HBO and HBO Max.
