The new trailer for “Totally Under Control” sees clips of the world’s most famous COVID-19 patient stressing that the pandemic is NBD. “It’s, uh, gonna be just fine,” he says. “Whatever happens, we’re totally prepared,” he says. “One day, it’s like a miracle, it will disappear,” he says. Yeah, obviously that was not and is not the case. “It’s complete bullshit,” as one character in the upcoming doc puts it. “[Trump] has no idea what he’s talking about.”
Ophelia Harutyunyan, Suzanne Hillinger, and Alex Gibney filmed “Totally Under Control” in secret over the past five months. They interviewed scientists, medical professionals, and government officials willing to risk their careers to tell the truth about the massive shitshow that has been the United States’ response to the coronavirus.
“We, the scientists, knew what to do for the pandemic response. The plan was in front of us, but leadership would not do it,” an interviewee reveals in the spot. “The truth is that political leaders caused avoidable death and destruction,” another adds.
When asked if he takes responsibility for the havoc COVID-19 has wrought on the country he was elected to serve, Trump doesn’t even hesitate. “No, I don’t take responsibility at all,” he replies. Meanwhile, the death rate in the U.S. keeps climbing and there’s no end in sight.
“It will be a generation before we know the full extent of the damage wrought by this pandemic,” the doc’s press materials read, “but ‘Totally Under Control’ will stand as the definitive account of the Trump administration’s incompetence, corruption, and denial in the face of this global pandemic.”
Harutyunyan previously helmed the short “The Frame” and worked with Gibney on projects including “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley” and Going Clear: Scientology & the Prison of Belief.”
Hillinger has directed episodes of “The Weekly” and the doc “How to Fix an Election.” “Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You” and “Morgan Spurlock Inside Man” are among her producing credits.
“Totally Under Control” will be available On Demand October 13 and Hulu October 20.
