A Welsh journalist travels to Soviet Russia to interview Stalin and cover “the story no one is talking about” in “Mr. Jones.” A trailer for Agnieszka Holland’s new film has arrived and sees the titular character, Gareth Jones (James Norton, “Little Women”), trying to get to the bottom of a vast conspiracy.
Based on the actual events that inspired George Orwell’s “Animal Farm,” the film follows Jones as he sneaks into the Ukraine “and discovers massive, man-made famine, which is killing millions,” the director told us. In the spot, when he reports his findings, he’s ordered to issue retractions immediately or engineers — who are presumably among his sources — will be shot in retaliation.
One character wonders why Jones is so interested in covering the famine — what his agenda is with the story. “I don’t have an agenda,” he replies, “unless you call truth an agenda.”
In an interview with Women and Hollywood, Holland revealed she was drawn to “Mr. Jones” because she “wanted to give justice to one of the worst – and practically unknown – genocides. I felt that the story is incredibly relevant,” she said. “The world we’re living in [is starting] to look like the worst periods in the 20th century.” She described the film as “a story about fake news, corruption of media, cowardice of politicians, the indifference of nations, and — ultimately — the courage of an individual.”
Also starring Vanessa Kirby (“The Crown”) and Peter Sarsgaard (“Jackie”), “Mr. Jones” made its world premiere at the 2019 Berlinale. Andrea Chalupa penned the script.
Holland received an Oscar nod for Best Adapted Screenplay for “Europa Europa,” the story of a Jewish boy joining Hitler Youth in Nazi Germany. She also directed the pic. Holland’s many other directorial credits include “Spoor,” “The Secret Garden,” and “In Darkness.”
“Mr. Jones” opens February 7 in the UK. It is expected to hit U.S. theaters in April.
