Trailer Watch: Vanessa Kirby Enters the Oscar Race with “Pieces of a Woman”

"Pieces of a Woman"

Expectant parents are dealt a tragic blow in a new trailer for “Pieces of a Woman.” “I wanted to stay at home. I wanted the baby to decide when she wanted to come,” Martha (Vanessa Kirby) explains. Her home birth takes a horrific turn, leaving her and her husband’s (Shia LaBeouf) lives irrevocably changed.

The drama sees Martha mourning the loss of her baby and the future that never came. Her grieving process leaves her husband wondering why she’s “trying to disappear [his] kid,” and her mother (Ellen Burstyn) pressuring her to testify in court against her midwife. “She has to pay for her incompetence,” Martha is told. “We need some justice here.”

Kirby has been receiving Oscar buzz for her performance in the film since “Pieces of a Woman” made its world premiere at Venice Film Festival in September.

“Pieces of a Woman” hits select theaters December 30 and launches on Netflix January 7. Kata Wéber (“Jupiter’s Moon”) penned the script.
