Trailer Watch: Veronica Mars’ Theatrical Preview

The official trailer has been released for the much anticipated Veronica Mars movie. Thankfully, it turns away from the “choosing boyfriends” theme of the previously released “first look” to focus on our heroine’s sleuthing skills and uncomfortable homecoming.

In the nine years since we last saw her, Veronica Mars graduated from teen private eye to “big-shot New York lawyer.” She certainly looks the part, in an all-black suit and ironed-straight hair. She’s as compassionate and resourceful as ever, but her buttoned-up style reveals she’s still the prickly, defensive wounded warrior we met in Neptune. A cardboard-cutout of a Strong Female Character she ain’t.

The trailer doesn’t offer much in the way of new revelations. The plot has Veronica (Kristen Bell) returning to her hometown to help absolve her teen boyfriend Logan (Jason Dohring) from accusations of murder. Veronica runs into many of her high-school friends and enemies, among them best friend Mac (Tina Majorino), former flame Leo (Max Greenfield), and frat-clown Dick (Ryan Hansen). The movie’s IMDb page suggests it’ll have as many celebrity cameos as Anchorman 2, which will hopefully draw in new audiences who have never seen the show before.

This is one to watch as it was crowdfunded but will be released by a major (Warner Brothers) studio. The Veronica Mars movie will be released on March 14.
