Trailer Watch: Vicky Krieps Is a Filmmaker Questioning Her Choices in Mia Hansen-Løve’s “Bergman Island”

"Bergman Island"

“Do you think you can create a great body of work and raise a family at the same time?” asks Vicky Krieps in a new trailer for “Bergman Island.” Written and directed by Mia Hansen-Løve, the drama tells the story of a filmmaking couple who visit the island that inspired Ingmar Bergman.

Chris (Krieps) finds the island’s calm and perfection “oppressive,” while Tony (Tim Roth) considers it “soothing.” When they’re not tending to their young son, Chris and Tony are working on screenplays for their upcoming films.

“You know how hard writing is for me — it’s torture, it’s self-inflicted agony, it’s blood from a stone,” Chris tells Tony. Her husband is less than sympathetic. “Well then, do something else,” he suggests. Chris thinks he’s angling for her to be a “full-time housewife.”

Tensions mount as their scripts progress and the lines between reality and fiction begin to blur.

Hansen-Løve won the Silver Bear for best director at the 2016 Berlinale for “Things to Come.” “Maya,” “Eden,” and “Goodbye First Love” are among her other features.

Krieps’ credits include “Phantom Thread” and “Hanna.”

“Bergman Island” made its world premiere in Cannes this July and is set to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival, which kicks off tomorrow, September 9. The film opens in theaters October 15.
