Trailer Watch: Weed, Romance, & Shenanigans Abound in “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens” Season 2

"Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens": Zach Dilgard

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Such is life — and “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens.” A trailer has arrived for Season 2 of Awkwafina’s semi-autobiographical comedy and sees Nora (Awkwafina) and her family pursuing new careers and romances, while still finding plenty of time to do what they do best: get into shenanigans and give each other shit.

Nora, a devoted stoner, has a new job at a CBD establishment this season, and is having trouble being on time and staying on-brand. “We are a CBD store. Please don’t tell our customers to smoke weed,” her boss explains to the sales associates, giving Nora a pointed look. “Mm-hmm,” Nora replies, playing innocent. “Don’t do that. Y’all don’t do that.”

As for Nora’s cousin and frenemy, Edmund (Bowen Yang), he’s considering giving acting a shot (“Los Angeles, here we come!”). Her grandma (Lori Tan Chinn) gets into arm wrestling, and her dad (BD Wong) is getting serious with his new girlfriend. Nora herself seems to receive a marriage proposal in the spot.

There’s a lot going on, so much so that Nora still hasn’t found time to clean out her disgusting sanctuary. “I can’t leave your room without catching Hep C!” Edmund yells at one point. Nora just giggles.

Awkwafina created “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens” alongside Teresa Hsiao. It ranked as the #1 freshmen comedy of 2020 among audiences aged 18-49. Margaret Cho is among Season 2’s guest stars.

Last year, Awkwafina became the first woman of Asian descent to win the Golden Globe for best lead actress in a movie comedy/musical, for her performance in Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell.” You can catch her next in Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” out September 3. Her other credits include “Raya and the Last Dragon,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” and “Ocean’s Eight.”

“Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens” will return with a two-episode premiere August 18 on Comedy Central.
