Trailer Watch: Winona Ryder’s Creepy Quest in Netflix’s “Stranger Things”

Winona Ryder in “Stranger Things”: Netflix

If 99 times out of 100, a missing kid is with a parent or a relative, what about the other one time? That’s what Winona Ryder’s character wants to know in this creepy new trailer for Netflix’s “Stranger Things.”

Set in Hawkins, Indiana in the 1980s, “Stranger Things,” “chronicles the search for a young boy who vanishes into thin air under highly suspicious circumstances. His mother (Ryder) opens an investigation into the boy’s disappearance with local authorities that unravels a series of mysteries involving top-secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces, and one very strange little girl.”

Netflix describes the series as “A love letter to the supernatural classics of the 80’s, ‘Stranger Things ’ is a coming of age story for three boys that draws this quaint community into a world where mysteries lurk beneath the surface.”

That love letter is clearly evident in the visual style of the series, which has a definite air of films like “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “E.T.,” and even the more recent “Super 8.” But while those films are decidedly family friendly, Winona Ryder frighteningly wielding an ax shows that the show has potential to get a little more adult.

Season 1 of “Stranger Things” hits Netflix July 15. Check out the trailer below.
