Trailer Watch: Women Battle for the Throne in “The White Princess”

“The White Princess”

Attention “Outlander” and “Game of Thrones” fans: your next obsession will be here soon. A trailer for the Starz limited series “The White Princess” just arrived.

A follow-up to “The White Queen,” “The White Princess” picks up three days after the events of “White Queen” left off, according to IndieWire. The historical drama centers on “the women waging the ongoing battle for the English throne: Lizzie (Jodie Comer, ‘My Mad Fat Diary’), Lady Margaret Beaufort (Michelle Fairley, ‘Game of Thrones’), and Dowager Queen Elizabeth Woodville (Essie Davis, ‘The Babadook’).” Both “White Princess” and “White Queen” are based on “The Cousins’ War” books by Philippa Gregory.

“The White Princess” trailer hints at inter-family conflict and cunning power plays. When Lizzie marries, Lady Margaret says her motto is “Humble and Penitent.” “You would do well to abide by it,” she warns. But Lizzie has no intention of following the advice: “‘Humble and Penitent’ be damned,” she scoffs. “‘Hidden and Patient,’ that will be my motto.”

The trailer frames “The White Princess” as a story in which the women are pulling the strings, using their behind-the-scenes influence to call the shots. Lizzie’s husband, Henry VII (Jacob Collins-Levy), tells Lizzie she has “no free will in this,” but he seems to be seriously mistaken. We can’t wait to see when and how Henry realizes just how wrong he is about his wife.

“The White Princess” is written by Emma Frost, who also penned “The White Queen.” Frost is the screenwriter of the upcoming Zelda Fitzgerald biopic, “Zelda,” starring Jennifer Lawrence.

“The White Princess” premieres on Starz April 16.
