Trailer Watch: Yalitza Aparicio Has a Star-Making Role as a Domestic Worker in “Roma”

"Roma"

A trailer has dropped for “Roma,” a favorite out of Venice and Telluride. Inspired partly by the childhood of its writer-director, Alfonso Cuarón (“Gravity”), the drama is set in 1970-71 in the Roma neighborhood of Mexico City and tells the story of Cleo (newcomer Yalitza Aparicio), a domestic worker living with the middle class family that employs her.

The spot reveals little of the black and white film’s plot, but includes footage of Cleo working around what appears to be a happy family. But political turmoil is mounting, and the family begins to fall apart. Cleo, meanwhile, seems to be having an affair with a married man.

Aparicio is receiving raves for her performance.

“Roma” opens in LA, New York, and Mexico November 21, with additional cities to follow. The film hits Netflix December 14.
