“Do you recognize yourself as a sinner?” a teenage girl is asked in a new trailer for “You Can Live Forever.” Set to debut at Tribeca Film Festival tomorrow, June 11, the Canadian drama is set in the early ’90s and tells the story of Jamie (Anwen O’Driscoll, “Burden of Truth”), a gay teen who is sent to live with her devout Jehovah’s Witness relatives following her father’s death.
While the family prays for her to feel “love and wisdom,” what Jamie’s feeling is attraction — to Marike (June Laporte, “When Calls the Heart”), the daughter of a prominent Witness Elder. When the pair aren’t stealing kisses and cuddles, Marike is joking about converting Jamie. Their secret romance doesn’t appear to stay secret for long. The community notices their mutual attraction and takes action to keep them apart.
“You Can Live Forever” marks Sarah Watts and Mark Slutsky’s feature debut. They also penned its script.
