Trailer Watch: Zoey Deutch Repeats Her Past in Ry Russo-Young’s “Before I Fall”

“Before I Fall”: Open Road

Take “Groundhog Day,” change the main character from a grumpy middle-aged man to a teenage girl, and make it a little darker and creepier, and you’ve got Ry Russo-Young’s “Before I Fall,” starring Zoey Deutch.

Directed by Russo-Young and written by Maria Maggenti (“Monte Carlo”). “Before I Fall” is based on the 2010 novel by Lauren Oliver, in which “a charmed young woman is stuck reliving the day of her death during one inexplicable week. She untangles the mystery surrounding her death — and discovers the true value of everything she is in danger of losing.”

The official synopsis goes into more detail: “What if you had only one day to change absolutely everything? Samantha Kingston has everything: the perfect friends, the perfect guy, and a seemingly perfect future. Then, everything changes. After one fateful night, Sam wakes up with no future at all. Trapped reliving the same day over and over, she begins to question just how perfect her life really was. As she begins to untangle the mystery of a life suddenly derailed, she must also unwind the secrets of the people closest to her, and discover the power of a single day to make a difference, not just in her own life, but in the lives of those around her — before she runs out of time for good.”

Deutch, the daughter of actress Lea Thompson and “Pretty in Pink” director Howard Deutch, has a whopping seven films in post-production at the moment, giving rise to the young actress’ star. She most recently appeared in “Dirty Grandpa” and “Everybody Wants Some!”

Russo-Young has written and directed “Nobody Walks,” “You Won’t Miss Me,” and “Orphans.”

“Before I Fall” will hit theaters on March 3, 2017.
