Tribeca and Berlinale Winner “House of Hummingbird” Gets Virtual Theatrical Release

"House of Hummingbird"

Kino Lorber and Well Go USA are teaming up to bring “House of Hummingbird” to audiences. A press release announced that the award-winning coming-of-age drama will be shown by virtual cinemas through the Kino Marquee virtual theatrical exhibition platform beginning June 26.

Written and directed by Bora Kim, “House of Hummingbird” is set in 1994 Seoul and tells the story of Eun-hee, a quiet eighth grader (Ji-hu Park) who is ignored by her parents and brother. Described as living her life like a “hummingbird searching for a taste of sweetness wherever she may find it,” she spends her time “roaming the neighborhood with her best friend, going on adventures, exploring young love, and experiencing everything that accompanies growing up in a country on the brink of enormous change,” the pic’s synopsis details.

When asked what drew her to the story, Kim told us. “It all started from a nightmare I had while I was doing my MFA in New York. At the time I was living in a foreign country for the first time while learning a new language and working on a master’s degree. During this period, I felt very unstable and started having this dream about going back to middle school again. It felt like a total nightmare. Every time I woke from the nightmare, I felt so relieved that it was only a dream. The unease I was feeling at grad school was bringing back my past memories and traumas from middle school — a period during which I was most unstable,” she explained. “I realized there was something going on in that period of my life, and I started to dig into the memories.”

“House of Hummingbird” was named Best International Narrative Feature at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival. Park won the fest’s prize for Best Actress in the International Narrative category. The pic also took home the Grand Prix for Best Feature Film at the Berlin International Film Festival Generation 14plus and NETPAC and Audience awards at the Busan International Film Festival, among other honors.

Tickets for “House of Hummingbird” can be purchased through theatrical partner sites here.
