Amy Sedaris is making your next favorite TV show. The actress and comedian has landed a 10-episode straight-to-series pickup from truTV for an untitled, half-hour comedy she created and stars in, The Hollywood Reporter writes.
Destined to be a cult classic, the series “has been described as featuring Sedaris and a mashup of hospitality, variety, and talk-show formats,” THR reports. “Each episode of the series will revolve around a traditional theme, such as fish, wood, or grieving, and will combine Sedaris’ humor and talents as a crafter, chef, baker, and hostess.”
“I’ve been doing this show in my head for years. It will be terrific to get it on TV so I can free up some wiggle room up in my skull,” Sedaris, whose recent TV credits include “Thanksgiving,” “Difficult People,” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” said in a statement.
“Sometimes it’s just enough for me to have the idea. I don’t need to see it through to the end,” Sedaris has said in the past. “When it actually happens, I’m always disappointed because it’s never like what I imagined in my head. When an idea becomes a reality, then it’s a job. I’d rather just think about it,” she explained. “I know that makes me sound like a pothead, but I’ve always been that way. That’s why I love improvisational theater so much. You do it once and then it’s done. You don’t get bogged down with a lot of preplanning and repetition. If I do something and it gets a laugh, I don’t want to do it again. Why bother?”
Clearly, Sedaris has a lot of passion for this particular idea, as she has committed to seeing it through to the end. She’s also one of the project’s producers.
“It only took one meeting for us to want this show out of Amy’s head and on our air,” said Marissa Ronca, executive VP and head of programming at truTV. “Amy is a creative genius who, throughout her career, has created authentic, original characters and worlds that comedy fans like us have loved. We’re incredibly excited to bring her specific and hilarious brand of comedy to truTV.”
Sedaris previously co-created “Strangers with Candy,” a beloved Comedy Central show that saw her playing a 46-year-old high school freshman.
