Call it the Scandal effect. Or the Homeland effect. Or the Veep effect. Or the Parks and Recreation effect.

There’s no denying that “women leaders in government” is a TV trend right now. Katherine Heigl even combined two of the shows above, Scandal and Homeland, for her comeback vehicle, NBC’s State of Affairs.

Women might get two more opportunities to prove their small-screen patriotism this fall. Joining Veep’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Scandal’s Kate Burton in the VP chair will be Sharon Stone, who will star as Madame Vice President Natalie Maccabee in TBS’s pilot Agent X. The series has a “National Treasure meets The Bourne Identity” cast of characters and will include a mysterious and dangerous “Agent X.”

The Hollywood Reporter describes the show as centering “on an unseen person who works to protect the country and its citizens from all manner of threats by any means necessary in times of extreme crisis when traditional law and government aren’t in a position to help. Created by the original Founding Fathers but hidden from the view of the public, there is an agent of unknown identity that is trained and ready to serve — deployed only at the careful discretion of the vice president.”

On the network side of things, CBS is considering Madame Secretary, a drama created by Homeland writer Barbara Hall. The series looks much less high-concept than Stone’s vehicle, focusing instead on the “personal and professional life of a maverick female Secretary of State as she drives international diplomacy, wrangles office politics and balances a complex family life,” according to THR. No star has been announced.
