“Everything that’s been so terrible and so painful in the last few months is leading me to this point. It’s amazing to realize I hold the keys to the prison that is my mind,” says Hannah (Lena Dunham) in the trailer for the third season of HBO’s Girls. Premiering on January 12 with a two-episode launch, Girls’ third season looks like it’ll be much of the same: the doomed but enduring pairing of Hannah and Adam (Adam Driver), the clueless but self-conscious stumbles of princesses Marnie (Alison Williams) and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet), and the mysterious reappearance of the obliviously infuriating Jessa (Jemima Kirke).
Friendships, relationships, and soul-searching/navel-gazing once again assume center stage on Girls — “I’m not interested in anything [my friends] have to say! That’s not the point of friendship!” yells Hannah, unwittingly declaring the show’s thesis — but there seems to be one major change afoot. After (probably) reneging on her book deal, Hannah’s exasperated presence in a corporate cubicle suggests she’s finally growing up — and hating every minute of it.
