A pair of films by and about women dominate this year’s Goya nominations.

Also known as Spain’s Oscars, the Goyas have recognized Paula Ortiz’s Lorca adaptation “The Bride” with the most nods this year (12, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress for Inma Cuesta). Isabel Coixet’s Arctic adventure “Nobody Wants the Night,” starring Juliette Binoche and Rinko Kikuchi, received the second most with nine, including ones in the same categories as above.

Based on Federico Garcia Lorca’s play “Blood Wedding,” “The Bride” finds a woman running off to elope with her already married true love on her wedding day (to a different man, natch). “Nobody Wants the Night” finds a woman (Binoche) trekking to the North Pole in 1908–09 in search of her missing explorer husband with the help of his Inuit mistress (Kikuchi).
