The Writers Guild of America has announced the nominees for its 2017 awards. The eligibility period for the 2017 awards falls between December 1, 2015 and November 30, 2016.
The good news is, almost all series nominated for major categories have one or more women on the writing staff nominated for an award. Some of the most prestigious male-centric dramas, like “Better Call Saul” or “Atlanta,” have women on their writing teams who have earned nominations.
Some female-centric favorites, including “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “VEEP,” have earned nominations, as have newcomers “One Mississippi,” “Better Things,” and the Anita Hill TV movie “Confirmation.”
According to a WGA report called “Renaissance in Reverse?” which examined data through the year 2014, female television writers have made slight advances in the industry. The number of female writers employed in TV has increased from the 27 percent in the previous report to 29 percent, and they’ve made strides in closing the income gap, earning 93 cents on the dollar in relation to male counterparts, an increase of two cents.
The WGA is striving to keep these advancements moving. The guild, as Women and Hollywood previously reported, recently opened up their TV Writers Access Project, which is open to guild members who are minorities, women, LGBT, disabled, and/or over the age of 55. The goal of the project, according to the WGA, is to “identify excellent diverse writers in order to provide a hiring resource for television writer-producers.”
