“UnREAL” concluded its fourth and final season earlier this year, but series co-creator Sarah Gertrude Shapiro has plenty more stories to tell. She just signed on to a two-year overall deal with ABC Studios, Variety reports. She was previously under an overall deal with A+E Studios, the producers behind “UnREAL.”
Inspired by Shapiro’s SXSW short “Sequin Raze,” “UnREAL” took place behind-the-scenes of a “Bachelor”-esque reality dating show and centered on a conflicted feminist producer (Shiri Appleby) and her controlling boss (Constance Zimmer). The first three seasons of the drama aired on Lifetime, and fourth dropped on Hulu.
Shapiro scored an Emmy nod and Peabody Award for her work on “UnReal.” Both it and “Sequin Raze” were inspired by her experiences working on “The Bachelor.”
The deal sees Shapiro developing projects “across all platforms both for ABC Signature Studios and ABC Studios,” according to the source.
Shapiro is set to make her feature directorial debut on an untitled Amazon drama about a female army that takes on ISIS. She also penned the script for the project.
