Valérie Lemercier’s Céline Dion-Inspired Pic “Aline” Lands at Roadside Attractions, Samuel Goldwyn Films

"Aline"

A new day has come: audiences stateside are finally going to get the chance to see Valérie Lemercier’s unofficial Céline Dion biopic. Loosely inspired by the life of the French-Canadian superstar, “Aline” made its world premiere at Cannes. Variety reports that Roadside Attractions and Samuel Goldwyn Films secured U.S. distribution rights with plans for a theatrical release in early 2022.

In addition to directing and co-writing “Aline,” Lemercier stars in the pic as Aline Dieu, “a singing prodigy (who is meant to be Celine Dion) who grew up in 1960s Quebec surrounded by her tight-knit family of 13 siblings. When a famous producer, Guy Claude (who is meant to be René Angélil), discovers Aline and her golden voice, he sets out to make her the world’s greatest singer. The crowd-pleasing film charts Aline’s life journey from her childhood through to her sudden rise as a global superstar, showing her impressive transformation. The movie closely details Aline’s relationship with her producer and mentor, who became her husband, while showing her navigating a busy career and motherhood,” the source summarizes.

Lemercier told Variety that she “tried to be in the perfume” of Dion’s life despite adding many fictional elements to “Aline.”

“Valérie’s tour de force performance as an emerging worldwide singing superstar created an enormous splash at Cannes this year, and we think American audiences will be every bit as thrilled to discover this one-of-a-kind entertainer in movie theaters early in 2022,” Roadside and Goldwyn said in a joint statement.

Lemercier’s other features include “Quadrille,” “From Behind,” and “50 is the New 30.”

Dion is a five-time Grammy winner whose biggest hits include “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” “A New Day Has Come,” and “My Heart Will Go On.” The latter was featured in “Titanic” and won the Oscar for Best Original Song.
